The Gold Coast is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia, attracting millions of visitors every year. Known for its beautiful beaches, stunning scenery, and vibrant nightlife, the Gold Coast has long been a favourite among locals and tourists alike. With the extension of the Gold Coast Light Rail to the airport, traveling to and from this picturesque location will become even easier and more convenient.

The Gold Coast Light Rail, also known as the G:link, is a modern and efficient transportation system that was first launched in 2014. The initial phase of the project covered a 13-kilometer stretch from Broadbeach to Southport, connecting some of the most popular tourist destinations on the Gold Coast.

Since then, the Gold Coast Light Rail has become an integral part of the city’s transport network, providing a reliable and affordable way to get around the area. And now, with the extension of the light rail to the airport, visitors can travel from the airport to some of the city’s most popular tourist destinations in just a matter of minutes.

The new 7.3-kilometer extension of the light rail will start from the existing Broadbeach South station and in time, will eventually run all the way to the Gold Coast Airport. The new stations being delivered as part of the current stage 3 program include Broadbeach North, Pacific Fair, Mermaid Beach, Nobby Beach, Miami, and Burleigh Heads. The stage 4 stretch down to the Gold Coast airport is considered to be the most challenging of the proposed scheme, with the connectivity through the Tallebudgera section of the line a difficult and pollitically heated prospect for the local government.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the $1.2 billion stage three extension will take the G:link from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads, with six new stations proposed.

“This is an exciting milestone for this project which will support around 760 good local jobs,” the Premier said.

“And if any of the previous stages are to go by, 90 per cent of workers came from the Gold Coast and surrounding regions.

“When complete, light rail Stage 3 will connect 27 kilometres of the Gold Coast to reliable and accessible public transport all the way from Helensvale to Burleigh Heads.

“Gold Coast Light Rail is an essential part of our successful delivery of the 2018 Commonwealth Games and will play an even more important role in the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

One of the most significant advantages of the new light rail extension is the reduction in travel time. Previously, visitors had to rely on taxis or buses to get to and from the airport, which often resulted in long waiting times and unpredictable delays. With the light rail extension, travellers can now reach the airport in just 25 minutes, making their travel experience more convenient and hassle-free.

Moreover, the new light rail extension is also an environmentally friendly way to travel. The light rail system is powered by electricity, which means that it produces fewer emissions than traditional modes of transportation such as cars or buses. This is an important step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the Gold Coast and promoting sustainable tourism.

The extension of the Gold Coast Light Rail to the airport has also created new opportunities for tourism and economic growth in the area. With improved accessibility and convenience, more visitors are likely to travel to the Gold Coast, leading to an increase in tourism revenue and job opportunities. The funding for the expansion south has been broken up into 3 committed government agencies, with the bulk of the funding from the Queensland State Government.
